What
is a Giclée print?
Giclee is from the
French word meaning 'fine spray'. An original painting
is digitally reproduced and then carefully adjusted to
match the original's colors. A very advanced (and expensive)
version of the desktop ink-jet printer is used to put the
image on a variety of papers or canvas. We typically offer
our Giclee prints on archival quality watercolor paper
and canvas. The printer uses minute droplets of pigmented
inks to create prints that cannot be duplicated by other
printing techniques… there is no visible dot screen
pattern and the resulting image has all of the subtle colors
of the original art. This produces exceptional museum quality
prints. Although the giclee movement is only a few years
old, with the development of stable inks that are said
to last from 50 to 200 years, it has become an accepted
archival printmaking process and a valuable collectors
piece.
You can have a fine art reproduction with all the vibrancy, details and true
colours of any original at DaLozzo Fine Art Publishing.
What is a Special Artist Edition? (SAE)
Only 10 giclee prints are hand embellished by the artist with special
touches, such as color highlighting, capturing the essence of an original.
Each Special Artist Edition is authenticated with a valuation certificate
and stamped thumbprint by the artist. Because they are handled much more
by the artist, they are regarded as a status symbol in the art world
and much in demand by avid collectors.
What is an Artist's proof? (AP)
Traditionally the artist proofs are the
first pieces off the press where the artist
would adjust the color during the printing
process based upon his impression of the accuracy
of those first prints.. As such, their value
is greatly increased. The artist is often allocated
about 10% of the limited edition prints as
Artist Proofs for his/her own use. These hand
picked artist proofs can be identified in the
art circle by a hand written “AP” designated
along the border of the print with the signature
of and numbering by the artist, i.e. 29/50AP.
What is a
Remarque? (R)
A remarque is an original one-of-its-type artwork, either in pencil, pen or
paint, added by the artist to the lower margin of the art print. A remarque
adds considerable value to the limited edition print due to this exclusive
addition.
What is a Limited
Edition? (LE) The total number
of pieces printed represents the edition size. Never
to be re-printed ever. All Limited Edition prints are
accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
What is an Open
Edition? (OP) The total number
of pieces printed is unlimited; it is not signed, numbered,
or personally inspected by the artist. They are printed
on a lighter weight paper stock. These factors all
affect the price, thus making it less expensive than
a limited edition print. Ideal for customers who are
interested in an image rather than the collectibility
of the piece.
Signed and
Numbered (SN)
Refers to a print from a limited edition run. Generally, all limited edition
prints are numbered as a fraction with the top digit being that particular
print's number and the bottom digit being the total size of the edition. For
example, the number 45/50 means this is the 45th print from a total number
of 50 prints produced. The artist will generally sign in pencil at the bottom
of the print as well.
Certificate
of Authenticity (COA)
A certificate that accompanies a limited edition print with detailed information
regarding the print. DaLozzo Fine Art Publishing Certificate of Authenticity
contains information such as artists name, the title, the technique used to
create the art, the medium and media printed on, artist’s signature,
the year printed, the printing process and the edition size. |
